The air thrummed with an unfamiliar tension, a low, guttural vibration that rippled through the sanctuary like a tremor. Skye felt it in her bones, a prickling unease that had been building for days, a shadow growing longer with each passing sunset. The usual chorus of chirps and calls had quieted, replaced by a hushed stillness, punctuated only by the rustle of disturbed leaves and the distant, unnerving cry of some unknown predator.
She nudged Kael’s flank with her snout, a silent question. He was always the first to sense danger, his large, amber eyes, usually pools of calm wisdom, now held a sharp, watchful alertness. He rumbled, a deep sound that vibrated against her ribs, not of reassurance, but of acknowledgment. His gaze swept over the perimeter, his sinewy body coiled like a spring, ready to lash out or defend.
"It is close," Kael finally murmured, his voice low, a gravelly whisper that carried the weight of countless seasons. "Closer than we have ever known."
