The air in Elara’s small, cluttered chamber thrummed with an unfamiliar energy. It wasn't the usual hum of the city’s temporal flux, nor the faint, metallic tang of chronomancy at work. This was deeper, colder, like the breath of a forgotten glacier. The Obsidian Lattice, nestled on its velvet cushion, pulsed with that same internal, icy light, casting fractured shadows that danced like specters on the rough-hewn walls. It had been a week since she’d found it, a week of hushed experiments and growing unease. The Lattice, the artifact that had been the whisper on the wind, the ache in her chronomancer’s bones, was undeniably aware.
Tonight, it was more than aware. It was insistent. A low, resonant thrum vibrated through the floorboards, through the worn soles of her boots, and settled deep within her chest. It felt like a key turning in a lock she hadn't known existed. Hesitantly, Elara reached out, her fingers hovering just above the Lattice’s impossibly smooth surface. The cold seeped into her fingertips, not an unpleasant chill, but a profound, ancient stillness.
Show me, she thought, her will a desperate plea against the gnawing guilt that had been her constant companion since her banishment. Show me what I did.
