Chapter 7
Sabotage and Secrets
Dr. Thorne's company escalates their attacks, attempting to steal Elias's research notes and discredit Professor Sharma, forcing Elias into deeper secrecy.
The air in Elias’s small, makeshift laboratory, tucked away in the quietest corner of his grandmother’s sprawling, slightly neglected garden, had always hummed with a gentle, hopeful energy. It was a space where the faint scent of drying herbs mingled with the sharp tang of chemical reagents, a testament to the blend of old and new that Elias so fervently believed in. Tonight, however, the hum was more of a tremor, a low thrum of anxiety that vibrated beneath the surface of his focused work. He hunched over his microscope, the blue light casting an ethereal glow on his determined face, the intricate patterns on his puffer jacket a stark contrast to the delicate, almost invisible structures he was examining.
Professor Sharma’s call had come an hour ago, her voice tight with a mixture of concern and controlled fury. “Elias,” she’d said, the usual warmth in her tone replaced by a brittle edge, “there’s been an… incident at my lab. A break-in. Nothing of value was taken, or so they claim, but my research notes on your nano-helix project… they’re gone.”
Elias’s stomach had plummeted. Gone. The careful, meticulously documented observations, the preliminary data that Professor Sharma had so generously offered to review and corroborate, spirited away in the dead of night. He’d felt a cold dread seep into his bones, a chilling echo of his grandmother’s own fragility. This wasn't just a setback; it was a deliberate, calculated blow.
