The air in the stable was thick with the scent of hay and honest sweat, a comforting perfume that always settled Eleanor’s restless heart. Buster, a furry shadow of devotion, lay by her feet, his tail thumping a slow rhythm against the straw. Today, however, the familiar peace felt a little frayed, like a favourite riding glove worn thin. A letter, crisp and official, lay on the worn workbench, its embossed crest a stark contrast to the rustic surroundings. It spoke of a debt, a legacy, and a race that was more than just a sport. It was a gamble for her family’s very survival.

Liam was mucking out a stall, his movements economical and strong. He paused, noticing Eleanor’s pensive gaze. "Everything alright, Miss Eleanor?" His voice was a gentle rumble, like distant thunder.

Eleanor sighed, picking up the letter. "It’s about the race, Liam. It seems… more important than I thought." She hesitated, then decided to share a sliver of the truth. "There are old debts tied to it. And… and the Harringtons. They seem to have a vested interest."
