Chapter 13
Scheherazade's Legacy
The spirit of Scheherazade encourages Danguolė to trust her own voice, to craft her own stories, no matter how small they seem.
Danguolė sat amidst the towering shelves, the scent of old paper and forgotten ink a familiar comfort. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom, like tiny, shy stars. She had always found solace in these hushed halls, a place where stories lay dormant, waiting for a gentle hand to awaken them. The Kaunas archives, a labyrinth of memories, felt like a second home, as real and as sprawling as the universe she sometimes glimpsed in her telescope at night.
But lately, a whisper of unease had begun to weave itself into her thoughts. The grand pronouncements she once made, the certainties she held, felt less solid, like sand castles washed away by an incoming tide. She remembered the girl who had dreamed of being Solomon, of possessing all the world’s wisdom, of knowing every answer. That girl felt distant now, a character in a story she was no longer writing. This feeling, this subtle shift, was more perplexing than any ancient riddle.
Then, one afternoon, as she was tracing the faded script on a brittle page, a flash of impossible color caught her eye. It was a creature of pure wonder, a gazelle, but unlike any she had ever seen. Its coat shimmered with the vibrant green of new spring leaves and the deep, mysterious blue of a twilight sky. It moved with an ethereal grace, its hooves barely disturbing the air. And it sang. The song wasn't made of notes that could be written down, but of feelings, of colours that vibrated in the air, of memories that bloomed and faded like fleeting dreams. It was a song that spoke directly to her heart, a melody of secrets and possibilities.
