Chapter 12
The Archives Within
She understands that her identity isn't a static monument, but a living archive, constantly updated with new experiences and insights.
Danguolė sat amidst the towering shelves of the Kaunas archives, the scent of old paper and forgotten ink a comforting balm. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the high windows, illuminating the quiet hum of history held within these walls. She had always loved this place, a labyrinth of stories waiting to be discovered. Her fingers traced the spine of a worn leather-bound book, its pages filled with tales of kings and queens, of faraway lands and brave knights. It was here, surrounded by the echoes of the past, that she had once felt like Solomon, wise and knowing, her mind a vast library of facts and fables.
But lately, a different feeling had settled within her, a gentle disquiet. The Solomon she had imagined herself to be felt like a costume she had outgrown. The certainty had begun to fray, replaced by a soft, questioning melody. She looked around the archive, not just at the books, but at the shadows that stretched and receded, at the way the light shifted, painting new patterns on the floor. It wasn't just the external world that was in constant flux; a subtle transformation was happening within her, too.
She remembered the flash of emerald and azure, the fleeting glimpse of the green and blue gazelle. Its song, a melody that seemed to shimmer and weave through the air, had stirred something deep inside her. It had whispered of secrets, of stories yet untold, much like the legendary Scheherazade, whose own voice had captivated a king with a thousand and one nights of tales. Danguolė had always admired Scheherazade, her ability to weave magic with words, to hold her audience spellbound. Was it possible, she wondered, that she too possessed such a gift, hidden beneath the layers of her past self?
