Chapter 11
A Symphony of Self
Danguolė begins to embrace the present, finding value not in past ideals but in her current experiences and the unique music of her being.
The dust motes danced in the slanted afternoon sunbeams, each a tiny, glittering star in its own miniature galaxy. Danguolė watched them, her fingers tracing the cool, smooth surface of a forgotten tome in the Kaunas archives. The air itself hummed with the quiet energy of a million stories, waiting, always waiting, to be discovered. She had spent so many hours here, lost in the scent of aged paper and the whisper of turning pages, believing herself to be a keeper of ancient truths, a miniature Solomon, dispensing wisdom from on high. But lately, a strange, unsettling quiet had settled in her heart, a feeling that the Solomon she thought she was had packed her bags and wandered off, leaving behind an empty throne.
She sighed, a soft sound swallowed by the vastness of the room. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy the archives anymore. The thrill of unearthing a faded map or a forgotten diary still sparked within her, but it felt… different. Less like uncovering a grand, universal truth and more like peeking into the private thoughts of strangers. And the stars, oh, the stars! They still called to her, their distant sparkle a promise of infinite wonder, but even their vastness seemed to echo a question: Who are you, Danguolė, now that you are no longer Solomon?
The question hung in the air, as persistent as the scent of old ink. It was a question that had begun to follow her, a shadow that stretched even in the brightest light. She remembered the confidence she used to feel, the certainty with which she’d imagined herself understanding everything, from the intricate workings of the universe to the simplest of human emotions. Now, there was a gentle unraveling, a slow shedding of that imagined skin. It was a little frightening, like stepping onto a path with no map, but there was also a faint, nascent curiosity blooming within her.
