The fellow prisoner, a man whose name Elias barely registered anymore, a shadow named Silas by the few who bothered to speak to him, watched Elias from across the common area. Silas was a study in resignation. His shoulders were perpetually hunched, as if carrying the weight of every lost year, every wasted sunrise. His gaze, when it fell on Elias, had always been a dull, unseeing thing, a reflection of the general despair that permeated the stone walls. But today, something was different.
