Guard Thorne’s boots echoed with their usual, measured rhythm on the cold, linoleum floor of the corridor. Each step was a testament to routine, to the unyielding sameness that defined this place. He’d walked this path a thousand times, perhaps more, his gaze sweeping over the cell doors with a practiced, almost detached efficiency. Today, however, a flicker of something other than mere duty stirred within him. It was a subtle shift, like a shadow passing over a familiar landscape, and it drew his attention, like a moth to an unexpected light, towards Cell Block C, Section 4.

Elias. The man who had arrived with a storm of despair clinging to him like prison-issue rags, a man whose very presence seemed to absorb the meager light that dared to penetrate these walls. Thorne had seen that look before, the hollowed eyes, the slumped shoulders, the quiet resignation that spoke of a spirit already broken. He’d seen it in many men, and he’d learned to expect nothing more than the slow decay of hope. Yet, Elias… Elias was different.

He paused outside Elias’s cell, the metal grate a familiar barrier. Inside, the usual muted sounds of solitary confinement were present – the rustle of worn fabric, the soft thud of a book being placed down. But there was something else, too. A faint, almost imperceptible hum of concentration. Thorne leaned closer, his breath misting the cold metal.
