The late afternoon sun, usually a warm hug on Kai’s skin, felt a little hazy today, as if the world outside the window was holding its breath. Alex had been hunched over the dining table for hours, the sticker spread out like a map of secrets. Kai, usually bubbling with questions, sat quietly, tracing the faint lines of the symbols with a fingertip. The toy, a bright red robot with whirring gears, lay forgotten nearby.

“It’s like a secret language, isn’t it?” Kai murmured, their voice barely a whisper.

Alex looked up, a flicker of something – exhaustion mixed with a fierce, dawning excitement – in their eyes. They pushed a stray lock of hair behind their ear. “It really is, Kai. I’ve never seen anything like it. These aren’t just addresses; they’re… coordinates of a kind. And these symbols…” Alex tapped a tiny, intricate starburst. “I think I’ve seen this before, a long time ago.” A shiver, almost imperceptible, ran down Alex’s spine. They’d been checking over their shoulder more often lately, a habit honed by years of chasing stories that often led into dark corners.
