The Paris Rendezvous
The air in the Parisian cafe was thick with the scent of freshly baked croissants and strong coffee, a comforting aroma that usually settled Alex’s nerves. But today, a different kind of tension hummed beneath the surface, a subtle thrum that had followed them from the bustling markets of Istanbul all the way to the elegant avenues of Paris. Kai, perched on a plush velvet chair, traced invisible patterns on the condensation of their water glass, their brow furrowed in concentration. They’d been unusually quiet since their arrival, a sure sign that their sharp mind was working overtime, piecing together the fragments of this increasingly bizarre puzzle.
“Another clue, Mom?” Kai’s voice was a soft murmur, barely audible above the clatter of porcelain and the murmur of French conversation.
Alex glanced down at the worn photograph spread on the small, marble-topped table. It was a picture of a tiny, intricately carved wooden bird, perched on a weathered windowsill. The detail was incredible, each feather meticulously rendered. “I think so, sweetie,” Alex replied, their voice laced with a weary excitement. “This bird… it matches a symbol on the sticker. And look at the window frame. There’s a faint etching, almost like a signature.”
