The Turkey Gambit
The scent of cinnamon and roasting nuts hung heavy in the air, a delicious perfume that clung to Kai’s clothes like a second skin. They’d been exploring the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul with Alex for what felt like hours, a dizzying labyrinth of carpets, lanterns, and gleaming copperware. Alex, usually so focused, seemed a little distracted, their eyes darting around the bustling crowds, a familiar habit Kai had learned to recognize as a sign of Alex being on high alert.
“Look, Kai!” Alex exclaimed, pointing towards a stall overflowing with vibrant pashminas. “Remember that symbol on the sticker? The one that looked like a tiny coiled snake?”
Kai’s heart gave a little leap. They’d been sketching that symbol, along with the others from the sticker, in their worn notebook. “You mean this one?” Kai held up their notebook, showing Alex a drawing of a spiraling pattern.
