Chapter 9

Dawn of the Electric Serpent

6 min read

The air thrummed with a desperate silence, a palpable absence of the usual vibrant hum that had been the heartbeat of Elara’s village for as long as she could remember. The bioluminescent flora, once a riot of pulsating blues and emeralds, now offered only a faint, sickly pulse, like dying embers. Elara stood on the edge of the Great Canopy, her gaze sweeping over the dimming forest. The blight had spread with a terrifying swiftness, a creeping vine of shadow that choked the life from everything it touched. Her heart ached with a familiar pang of worry, a constant companion since the serpent’s light had begun to wane.

Beside her, nestled in the crook of her arm, the Electric Serpent stirred. Its form, usually a vibrant cascade of pure energy, was now subdued, its glow a hesitant flicker. Elara stroked its shimmering scales, a silent promise passing between them. “We will find a way,” she whispered, her voice barely audible above the rustle of wilting leaves. The serpent pulsed weakly against her skin, a silent affirmation that resonated deep within her soul.

Her journey into the shadow-choked lands had been arduous, a descent into a world that felt alien and hostile. Each step had been a battle against the encroaching darkness, a physical manifestation of the blight that threatened to consume her home. She had faced fear in its purest form, the primal terror of the unknown, but the serpent’s presence, however faint, had been a constant source of strength. It was more than just a creature of energy; it was a part of her, an extension of her own spirit.
