Mikhail traced the worn silver inlay on the locket, a familiar ritual performed countless times since his grandmother had pressed it into his palm. It was a simple thing, oval-shaped, with a faint patina that spoke of age and countless touches. Inside, two faded portraits stared out: his grandparents in their youth, their smiles a soft ghost against the sepia tones. He’d always thought of it as a keepsake, a tangible link to a past that felt increasingly distant, like a melody heard through a thick fog. But lately, a strange hum seemed to emanate from it, a subtle vibration that he felt more in his bones than in his fingertips.

He sat in his cluttered apartment, surrounded by towers of books and stacks of yellowed newspapers, the air thick with the scent of old paper and dust. Anya Petrova’s words echoed in his mind, a stark contrast to the lyrical pronouncements of the folklore he so cherished. “Statistical outliers,” she’d called them. “Deviations from the norm.” He understood the words, of course. He’d even seen the numbers she’d presented, a dizzying array of percentages and probabilities that seemed to mock the natural order of things. But numbers, to him, felt cold, sterile. They didn’t capture the chill that crept up his spine when the streetlights flickered in unison, or the unsettling stillness that fell over the market square when the wind died abruptly, leaving an almost suffocating silence.

He opened the locket again, turning it over and over. The silver felt warmer than usual today. He remembered his grandmother’s hushed stories, tales of pacts and promises made in times of great need, of entities that dwelled in the spaces between worlds. He’d dismissed them as fanciful embellishments, the colourful threads woven into the fabric of everyday life. Now, however, those threads seemed to be unravelling, revealing something far more intricate and terrifying beneath.
