Chapter 6
The Archivist's Counsel
Sergei Ivanov, the archive's guardian, guides Anya and Mikhail. He reveals his lineage and the pact's true purpose, emphasizing preservation and balance over conflict. His knowledge offers a new perspective on the encroaching darkness.
The air in Sergei Ivanov’s archive was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something like dried herbs and the faint, metallic tang of old ink. It clung to the back of Anya’s throat, a peculiar counterpoint to the sterile efficiency of her own office. Here, amidst towering shelves groaning under the weight of centuries, the hum of the modern world seemed to recede, replaced by a hushed reverence that felt both ancient and deeply unsettling. Mikhail, ever the enthusiast, moved with a quiet urgency, his fingers tracing the spines of leather-bound tomes as if greeting old friends. Anya, however, felt a prickle of unease crawl up her spine. Sergei, a man whose stillness seemed to absorb the very silence of the room, gestured for them to follow him deeper into the labyrinthine space. His movements were economical, his gaze steady and observant, as if he were cataloging their every breath. He led them to a small, alcove-like study, a single, sturdy wooden table bathed in the weak glow of a low-hanging lamp. The walls here were lined with scrolls, tied with faded ribbons, and smaller, intricately carved wooden boxes.
“You see,” Sergei began, his voice a low murmur that seemed to resonate with the hushed tones of the archive, “these are not merely historical records. They are testaments. They are the echoes of choices made when the world was younger, and perhaps, more honest about its complexities.”
