Chapter 16
A Test of Courage
The darkness makes a direct assault. Elara, armed with the counter's knowledge, must lead the villagers in their first true stand.
The air grew heavy, not with the usual scent of pine and damp earth, but with a cloying, cold stillness that seeped into Elara’s bones. Elara nodded, her gaze drawn to the counter. The numbers were indeed shifting, not in their usual slow progression, but with a frantic urgency. It felt like a heartbeat, a frantic warning. She remembered the fragmented words from the old book, the whispers of a sacred blood, of a curse that could break. She had felt a connection to the counter, a humming resonance that spoke of more than just loss. It counted not just the souls the darkness claimed, but the strength it took to resist.
