Elara felt it first, a cold prickle on her skin, a whisper of something ancient and hungry stirring in the vast, consuming dark. The counter, usually a steady hum against her palm, now pulsed with a frantic rhythm, its digits blurring as if struggling to keep pace with a rising tide of despair. It was as if the very shadows, pushed back by their unified efforts, were recoiling, only to gather their strength, their malice, for a more direct assault.

Outside the small cottage, the village square was a tableau of defiance. Kael, his face grim but resolute, stood with a group of villagers, their hands clasped, their eyes fixed on the encroaching gloom. They were not armed with steel, but with a potent blend of shared fear and a desperate, flickering hope. Elder Maeve stood beside Elara, her gaze steady, though a faint tremor ran through her fingers as she clutched a small, smooth stone.

"It knows," Maeve murmured, her voice barely audible above the rising wind. "It feels the light you have gathered, Elara. And it does not like it."
