Chapter 14
Gathering the Light
Elara rallies the villagers, sharing the counter's true meaning. She inspires them to find their own inner strength against the encroaching despair.
The air in the village square hung heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and a fear that was as old as the gnarled oak at its center. Elara stood before them, a small figure against the encroaching gloom, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. The counter, nestled in her satchel, felt like a warm, pulsing stone against her hip, a secret whispered just for her. Kael was there too, his arms crossed, his brow furrowed, a familiar mixture of concern and skepticism warring in his eyes.
"We've been told the darkness is a force that devours, that it counts the souls it takes," Elara continued, her voice gaining strength. "And it does. But the counter…" She paused, her hand instinctively going to her satchel. "The counter I found, the one from the old ruins, it counts something else. It counts the light. It counts the courage. It counts the moments when we choose hope over despair."
