The air in the village square had grown heavy, thick with a silence that wasn't peaceful but expectant, like the hushed breath before a storm. Kael stood near the well, his hands tucked into his pockets, the rough wool scratching at his palms. He watched Elara. She was across the square, by the ancient oak, her head bent over the counter. Even from this distance, he could see the intensity in her posture, the way her brow furrowed in concentration.

It had been days since the last time the counter had shown a flicker of hope. The numbers, once steady, now seemed to march forward with a relentless, grim purpose. Each tick was a tiny, insidious victory for the encroaching darkness. The elders whispered prayers, the children huddled closer to their mothers, and a gnawing fear settled over the village like a shroud.

Kael had always been a man of the earth, of the tangible. He understood the strength of a well-built fence, the bite of a sharp axe, the warmth of a hearth fire. But this darkness, this creeping dread that stole the light from the sky and the joy from people's hearts, was something else entirely. It was formless, insidious, and it defied logic.
