The air in Elder Maeve’s small, herb-scented cottage grew heavy, not with the usual comforting aroma of dried lavender and chamomile, but with a stillness that prickled Elara’s skin. Outside, the sun, a pale imitation of its former glory, cast long, hesitant shadows that seemed to cling to the edges of the village. But Maeve’s words painted a picture far more terrifying than mere numbers.
