The air in the village of Oakhaven grew heavy, thick with a nameless dread that clung to the eaves of houses and the rustling leaves of the ancient oak at its center. Each day, the great stone counter, perched on its weathered pedestal in the village square, clicked higher. Not just a few clicks, but a relentless, unnerving surge, as if the very breath of the world was being stolen, one soul at a time. Elara watched it, her heart a small, tight knot in her chest. The numbers, once a distant worry, now felt like a personal accusation, each digit a whisper of what was being lost.

The shadows, too, were bolder. They no longer skulked at the edges of the forest, but stretched long, greedy fingers towards the village fences. The children, once so full of laughter, now huddled closer to their mothers, their eyes wide and fearful. Even the bravest hunters, their faces etched with grim determination, spoke of an unsettling stillness in the woods, a silence that screamed of an unnatural presence.

One evening, as the sky bled into bruised purples and oranges, Elara sat with Elder Maeve by the hearth, the warmth of the fire a small comfort against the encroaching chill. The ancient counter, its stone worn smooth by centuries of wind and rain, stood sentinel in the square, its rhythmic click… click… click a constant, mournful dirge.
