The counter, nestled on its velvet cushion, seemed to hum with a silent energy, its digits a stark contrast to the fading afternoon light filtering through the small window. Elder Maeve, her face a roadmap of time and gentle sorrow, sat across from her, her hands clasped over a worn, leather-bound book.

“The counter,” Maeve began, her voice a low murmur, like pebbles shifting on a riverbed, “is not merely an instrument of reckoning, child. It is a vessel.”
