Elara clutched the worn leather satchel to her chest, the weight of the puzzle fragments a cold, hard presence against her ribs. She felt impossibly small, adrift in this sea of hardened faces and official pronouncements. Each step towards the reception desk was a battle against a rising tide of doubt, a whisper in her ear that this was a fool’s errand.

Detective Anya Sharma’s office was a stark contrast to the general disarray of the precinct. It was meticulously organized, almost unnervingly so. Files were stacked with military precision, pens aligned in their holder like tiny soldiers, and a single, framed photograph of a smiling woman stood sentinel on the desk. Elara recognized the woman from local news reports – a respected judge, a victim of a recent, unsolved hit-and-run. A shiver traced its way down Elara’s spine.

Anya herself was as sharp and precise as her workspace. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe bun, and her eyes, the color of strong coffee, scanned Elara with an unnerving intensity. There was no warmth there, only a professional assessment, a weighing and measuring of the person before her.
