The air in the Whispering Woods grew heavy, not with moisture, but with an ancient, unsettling stillness. Sunlight, once a dappled caress through the canopy, now struggled to pierce the oppressive gloom, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like spectral figures. Lawerencia, her belly a taut, magnificent curve beneath her worn tunic, stumbled over a gnarled root, her breath catching in a soft gasp. Beside her, Sir Kaelan’s hand was a comforting, firm presence on her arm, his shield catching the meager light as he scanned their surroundings with practiced vigilance.

“Steady, Lawerencia,” Kaelan’s voice was a low rumble, a stark contrast to the unsettling silence that seemed to swallow all other sound. “The ground is treacherous here.”

“It’s… the trees,” Lawerencia whispered, her voice raspy. “They feel like they’re watching. Like they’re breathing.” Her secret fear, the one she hid even from this man who had so unexpectedly become her protector, gnawed at her. She had always felt a strange pull towards the woods, a kinship she couldn't explain. Now, trapped within its depths, that feeling was amplified, laced with a primal dread. She wondered if this forest was more than just a collection of ancient timber; she wondered if it was alive, sentient, and perhaps, malevolent.
