The alley air hung thick and heavy, a familiar scent of damp brick and overflowing bins. Jessie, Kai, Amy, Ben, and Fred huddled together, the meager warmth of their shared presence a small defiance against the encroaching chill of the evening. Mr. Smith had sent them out for scraps, a routine that chafed at Jessie more than usual. It was the nagging feeling, the persistent echo of the stranger’s face, that made every command from Smith feel like a mockery.
“He’s always like this,” Fred grumbled, kicking a loose stone that skittered across the grimy asphalt. “Sends us out when it’s barely dark, like we’re supposed to find gold in the garbage.”
