For Jessie, it was just another day bleeding into night, a familiar rhythm of scavenging, dodging trouble, and the ever-present ache of something missing. He sat on an overturned crate in their usual alley, the scent of damp concrete and stale bread clinging to the air. Kai, ever watchful, was sharpening a shard of metal, her eyes scanning the street’s entrance. Amy was hunched over a discarded piece of electronic equipment, her brow furrowed in concentration, while Ben and Fred were engaged in a silent, intense game of cards, their faces illuminated by the flickering glow of a stolen lighter.

"Anything?" Jessie asked, his voice rough.

Kai shook her head, her dark braid swinging. "Just the usual shadows. No one looking for trouble, no one looking to give it."
