The rain had been a relentless drumbeat against the corrugated iron of their makeshift shelter for days, each drop a tiny hammer blow against Jessie’s fraying nerves. Mr. Smith’s pronouncements had grown sharper, his grip tighter, the air thick with unspoken threats. The encounter with Cyrus, the face that was his own, had ripped a hole in the fabric of Jessie’s reality, and now the world felt like a tattered quilt, its seams threatening to unravel. He’d seen the flicker of fear in Kai’s eyes, the tight set of Amy’s jaw, even the unusual stillness in Ben. Fred, as always, was a coiled spring of nervous energy, his gaze darting around like a cornered animal.

Tonight, the unease was a tangible thing, a cold hand gripping Jessie’s chest. They were crammed into a disused warehouse, the stench of damp concrete and decay clinging to everything. Mr. Smith had promised them a “new opportunity,” a phrase that always sent a shiver down Jessie’s spine. It usually meant more backbreaking work, more risks, more of the life they were desperate to escape.

“He’s up to something, I can feel it,” Kai murmured, her voice barely a whisper, her hand finding Jessie’s under the thin blanket they shared. Her touch was a small anchor in the swirling chaos of his thoughts.
