The path ahead twisted, a knot of thorny vines and shadowed rocks that seemed to mock their progress. Luna, Jasper, and Willow had been following the faint, silvery trail left by the moonbeams, a trail that was supposed to lead them to the Sunstone Glade, where Elder Whiskerwind had said the first clue to the Jade Paw's resting place lay hidden. But the glade, if it even existed, was lost to them now, swallowed by an encroaching darkness that felt thicker than any ordinary night.
Jasper, usually so confident, paced restlessly, his tail twitching with unease. "This is no good, Luna. We're going in circles. The moon-path seems to have vanished." He nudged a particularly stubborn bramble with his nose, the sharp thorns pricking his fur. "And this… this feeling… it’s like the air itself is holding its breath, waiting for something bad to happen."
Luna felt it too. A prickle of unease crawled up her spine, a whisper of the same dread that had settled over the Whispering Wind Kingdom since the Shadow Weaver’s influence had begun to spread. She looked at Willow, her usually bright eyes clouded with frustration. Willow, who always seemed to know the way, who could find a hidden berry patch or a forgotten shortcut with an uncanny ease, was staring blankly at the tangled mess of growth before them.
