The sun beat down with a ferocity that felt personal, a relentless hammer against the parched earth. Dust devils danced across the cracked fields, miniature whirlwinds of despair, and the air hung thick and heavy, devoid of even the faintest whisper of moisture. It was the kind of heat that seeped into your bones, promising only further suffering. And in the heart of it all, perched on his rickety fence like a crow surveying a graveyard, sat Petras Bučys, or ‘Špūrys’ as he was known, a sardonic grin splitting his weathered face.

“See? See what happens when you poke the bear?” Špūrys cackled, his voice a dry rasp that matched the landscape. He gestured with a gnarled finger towards Jonas’s wilting wheat, the stalks bent low as if in supplication. “I told you! The old ways, they have their wisdom. You can’t just go plugging in fancy machines and expect God to smile down on you. He’s got better things to do, like smiting fools who think they know better than their grandfathers.”

His pronouncements, delivered with the theatrical flourish of a village prophet of doom, were met with weary nods from the few other farmers who had ventured out, their faces etched with the same anxiety that gnawed at Jonas. The drought, a monstrous entity that had crept in like a thief in the night, was now laying bare the farm’s vulnerabilities, and with it, Jonas’s audacious plans.
