The sun, a malevolent eye in a bleached sky, glared down with an unholy intensity. It had been weeks, or was it months? Time had stretched and warped under its relentless gaze, each day a searing echo of the last. Jonas stood at the edge of the field, the dry, brittle stalks of wheat a testament to his growing despair. They were ghosts of green, their lifeblood leached away, leaving behind a whisper of what should have been. The earth beneath his worn boots was a tapestry of cracks, gaping wounds that mirrored the hollowness in his chest. This was not the vibrant, life-giving land his father had spoken of with reverence, but a parched, unforgiving desert.

He kicked at a clod of dirt, sending a plume of fine dust into the air. It settled on his sweat-slicked brow, a gritty reminder of his futility. Precision farming, organic methods, predictive analytics – all of it felt like a child’s game against the raw power of nature unleashed. He saw the faces of the villagers in his mind’s eye, their knowing smirks, their muttered pronouncements of “I told you so.” Petras Bučys, ‘Špūrys’ as they called him, would be practically gleeful, his grumbling prophecies of doom finally validated.

“This is it, isn’t it?” he murmured, the words scraping against his dry throat. “This is how it all ends.”
