He’d been out in the fields since dawn, his boots sinking into the cracked soil. The drone, a sleek, silent predator, had mapped the moisture levels yesterday, painting a grim picture on his tablet. Red zones spread like a fever across the digital landscape, a stark contrast to the hopeful green of his initial plans. His father, Antanas, had watched him, his face a mask of weary disapproval, his silence louder than any shouted argument.

“It’s no use, Jonas,” Antanas had finally grumbled, his voice raspy like dry leaves. “The land knows when it’s thirsty. You can’t force it.” He gestured with a gnarled hand towards a faded, leather-bound almanac resting on a shelf in the dusty barn. “This old book, it tells the story of the sky. It knows when the rains will come, and when they won’t.”
