The late afternoon sun, a molten gold disc, hung low in the Lithuanian sky, casting long, dancing shadows across the parched fields. Dust devils, like phantom dancers, pirouetted lazily in the heat, a testament to the relentless drought. Jonas stood beside his battered pickup truck, the dry earth crunching under his worn boots, his gaze fixed on the approaching figure of Mr. Volkov, the investor. The man was a stark contrast to the pastoral landscape – sharp suit, polished shoes, a briefcase that seemed impossibly clean. Beside him, Elena, her presence a calming counterpoint, offered Jonas a small, encouraging smile.

“Mr. Volkov,” Jonas began, his voice a little rough, the dryness of the air mirroring the dryness in his throat. “Thank you for coming.”

Volkov extended a hand, his grip firm, almost impersonal. “Mr. Jonaitis. The fields, as advertised. Rather… thirsty.” His eyes swept over the cracked earth, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face.
