The needle trembles in my hand, a silver sliver catching the harsh lunar light that streams through the porthole. It’s 1996 in Kaunas, but here on the moon, years are just numbers we whisper to ourselves to remember we came from somewhere. I am sixteen, and I do not have a father.
That’s a lie I’ve learned to stitch into the fabric of my memory. There were always men—shadow-shapes in the corridors of the colony, men who smelled of recycled air and burnt coffee. One of them, the one who thought I was able to run, made me run. He said I had a horse’s legs, a horse’s heart. So I ran, hours and hours, until my lungs ached and my feet blistered against the synthetic track. He was not evil. He was just a man who needed a horse, and I was a girl who needed a reason to move.
But I was not a slave. That word, šlavėja, it sits on my tongue like a pebble I cannot swallow. I was learning to stitch. To read overnight, the Bible in Lithuanian, its pages soft as moth wings. The words were strange, old, like the Russian grammar I had to learn instead of the facultative stitch I craved. Why is that like first art to be the Russian language instead of knowing just what to ask? I ask the silence. The silence does not answer. It never does.
