Chapter 7

Episode 7

77 its meaning not animation

The needle slides through the fabric, a thin silver fish swimming through a sea of white. I count the stitches as I go, each one a small anchor in the drifting quiet of the lunar dome. Outside, the Earth hangs like a blue marble in a black velvet pouch, and I remember the number 77, carved into the wall of the mining corridor where my mother used to work. She said it was a lucky number, but I never understood why. Now, sitting here with this dress half-formed on my lap, I think I finally get it. It’s not about luck. It’s about the space between the numbers—the silence between seven and seven, the pause before you take the next breath.

The fabric is Mondrian’s ghost, red and blue and yellow squares floating in a grid of black lines. I’m stitching them down, one by one, trying to make sense of the chaos that bubbles up inside me. The Russian words from the old woman’s voice still echo in my skull—почему—why? I don’t know why. I only know that the needle feels real in my hand, and the thread is a thin line connecting me to something solid. The mining tunnels taught me that. Down there, in the dark, you count your steps. You mark the walls with chalk. You find the seams of ore by feel, not by sight. It’s a language older than words, written in the bones of the moon.

I stop stitching and hold the dress up to the light. The red square catches the glow from the dome’s artificial sun, and for a moment, it looks like a wound. But I don’t want it to be a wound. I want it to be a door. A way out of this place where I am both here and not here, where the avatar of me walks and talks and breathes, but the real me is still lost in the corridors of my own mind. The dress is a map. Each stitch a coordinate. And 77 is the point where the lines cross, where the vertical meets the horizontal, and I can finally say: This is real. This is mine.
