I unpick the red square and lay it back on the white field. The fabric is thin, almost weightless, like everything here. My mother sips her tea without sound. The cup is ceramic, hand-painted with a blue pattern I vaguely recognize from some other life. She brought it from Earth, I think. Or maybe I imagined that. The colony exchange logs are full of fiction.
"I am trying," I say, but the words come out in English. She blinks. Her eyes are the same color as the tea, a pale brown that catches the cold light. I switch languages, try again. "Aš bandau." I am trying. The Lithuanian feels awkward in my mouth, a tongue I never fully learned but inherited like a scar.
She nods, slow. "You don't have to try, dukra. Just be."
