The air, once alive with the chirping of crickets and the rustle of leaves, had grown unnervingly still. Luna, with Jasper padding faithfully beside her, felt a prickle of unease crawl up her spine. They had ventured beyond the familiar paths of the Sunken Temple, their paws treading on ground that felt foreign and heavy. The vibrant green of the forest had begun to fade, replaced by a muted, sickly hue. Flowers that should have been bursting with color now drooped, their petals brittle and tinged with an unnatural grey.

“Do you feel that, Jasper?” Luna whispered, her voice barely disturbing the heavy silence. “It’s like the forest is holding its breath.”

Jasper, his ears swiveling, let out a low growl. “It’s more than just quiet, Luna. It’s… empty. Like something has sucked all the life out of it.” He nudged a wilting violet with his nose. The bloom crumbled to dust. “This isn’t natural.”
