Elara, her fingers stained with the deep indigo of crushed berries, watched Kai from the edge of the clearing. He was mending a fishing net, his movements economical and sure, the muscles in his forearms rippling with each pull. The setting sun, a molten orb bleeding gold and rose across the horizon, cast long, dancing shadows that played across his sun-weathered face.
A gentle breeze stirred the long strands of her dark hair, carrying with it the murmur of the river, the distant calls of night birds, and the low, comforting hum of voices from the communal longhouse. It was a symphony of their lives, a tapestry woven with threads of shared work, shared laughter, and shared sorrow.
Kai looked up then, his eyes, the color of the forest after rain, finding hers. A slow smile spread across his face, crinkling the corners of his eyes. He rose, brushing stray fibers from his leggings, and walked towards her. The short distance between them seemed to stretch, each step a deliberate rhythm in the quietude.
