Chapter 13: The Morning After
Clara and Leo spend their first full day of freedom together in Willow Creek, learning to trust again. Matteo visits with a final gift from his father, offering closure. As evening falls, Clara realizes that waiting is over and a new story is beginning.
The sun climbed higher, burning off the mist and warming the old bench where Clara and Leo sat. Willow Creek had never looked more beautiful—the leaves of the maples turning gold and crimson, the soft chatter of birds, the distant whistle of a train. Clara let out a long breath, feeling the tension of the past weeks drain from her shoulders.
Leo’s hand was still in hers, warm and solid. He hadn’t let go since they’d left the sheriff’s station. They’d given statements, confirmed the contents of the USB drive, watched as Officer Blake and his men were taken away in handcuffs. Mr. Moretti was in custody, his empire crumbling under the weight of Matteo’s evidence. Victor had vanished into the night, a ghost who had helped them and then faded.
“I can’t believe it’s over,” Clara whispered.
