Chapter 12: The Living Shadow
Clara and Leo flee through the woods as police close in, only to be rescued by a figure from the past: Matteo, alive and in hiding. He reveals he faked his death to escape his father's control and now wants to help them. But their escape is short-lived as the police, tipped off by an unknown source, surround their safe house.
The forest swallowed them whole. Branches clawed at Clara’s arms, roots tripped her feet, but she held Leo’s hand and ran. The sirens grew louder, then softer, then louder again—a pulsing wave of sound that seemed to come from every direction. Moonlight filtered through the canopy, casting silver streaks on the ground, but it was not enough to see by. She stumbled, and Leo caught her, pulling her forward.
“We need to find cover,” he said, his voice ragged. “They’ll have dogs.”
“Where? There’s nothing but trees.”
