Dust billowed around Conley, a gritty shroud that clung to his sweat-soaked tunic and stung his eyes. The roar of collapsing stone had faded, replaced by the ragged sound of his own breathing and the frantic thumping of his heart against his ribs. He stumbled out of the gaping maw of the temple, the midday sun a blinding white assault after the perpetual twilight within. In his hand, clutched tight enough to make his knuckles ache, was the artifact.

It was smaller than he'd imagined, a fist-sized orb of obsidian, etched with swirling patterns that seemed to writhe under his gaze. Not gold, not jewels, just dull, dark stone. Yet, he knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that this was it. The object of his arduous journey, the prize that had led him through treacherous jungles, past cunning traps, and into a brutal duel with Silas.

Silas. The memory of his rival’s dying gasp, the cold fury in his eyes, still echoed in Conley’s mind. He’d fought with a ferocity born of desperation, a primal need to survive. And he had. But the victory felt hollow, stained with the grim reality of Silas’s demise. The man had been a monster, consumed by his lust for power, but a monster nonetheless. Now, only the artifact remained, a silent testament to the bloodshed.
