The cavernous chamber groaned, a pained exhalation of ancient stone. Dust, thick as a shroud, billowed from newly formed fissures that spiderwebbed across the once-solid ceiling. Conley, his chest heaving, felt the tremor deep in his bones. Silas lay a crumpled heap near the pedestal, his ambition extinguished as thoroughly as the flickering torchlight that now guttered precariously. The artifact, a pulsating orb of obsidian, pulsed with a light that seemed to thrum with the temple’s dying heart.

He snatched it up, its surface cool and unnervingly smooth against his calloused palm. The weight was substantial, not just of mass, but of something far older, far more profound. A low rumble, deeper than any seismic shift, vibrated through the stone floor. He didn’t need to look back to know the fight had done more than just defeat Silas; it had fractured the very foundations of this sanctuary.

“Time to go,” he muttered, his voice raspy. The air itself seemed to thicken, charged with an unseen energy. He sprinted towards the entrance he’d so painstakingly navigated, the path now a treacherous obstacle course of falling debris. A massive stone slab, dislodged from the ceiling, crashed down behind him, narrowly missing his heels. The shrieking of tortured rock echoed in his ears, a symphony of destruction.
