The air in Liam’s small apartment felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the phantom scent of Maya’s perfume. Even with the blinds drawn, a sliver of the morning sun managed to slice through, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stillness. He ran a hand over his face, the stubble a rough testament to the sleepless night. Sleep had been a fleeting, fractured thing, haunted by the echo of Maya’s laughter, the feel of her skin against his, the sheer, breathtaking intensity of it all.

He’d replayed every moment, every touch, every whispered confession. It was a dangerous game he’d played, a reckless dive into a desire so potent it had consumed him. And now, the morning after, the stark reality of it all began to settle, a cold dread seeping into his bones. Mark. His best friend. The thought was a sharp, unwelcome jab. The words themselves felt like a brand, searing themselves into his conscience.

He’d left her apartment before dawn, a silent, furtive exit that felt both necessary and deeply wrong. He wanted to stay, to wake up beside her, to trace the curve of her hip, to lose himself in her eyes again. But the image of Mark’s face, open and trusting, flashed in his mind, a silent accusation. He couldn't. Not yet. He needed time to think, to unravel the tangled mess he’d made of his life.
