Maya traced the condensation ring left by her water glass on the polished mahogany of the bar. The club, usually a cacophony of pulsing beats and boisterous laughter, felt muted tonight, a distant hum against the storm brewing within her. Liam’s absence was a palpable ache, a void where a raw, exhilarating connection had recently blazed. It had been a week since that night, a week of phantom touches and stolen glances, a week of navigating the treacherous terrain of her own heart.
Her brother, Mark, his arm slung casually around her shoulders, steered her towards a vacant booth. “You’ve been quiet tonight, May. Everything okay?” His voice, usually a comforting rumble, felt like sandpaper against her raw nerves. She forced a smile, the muscles in her face feeling stiff and unfamiliar.
“Just tired, Mark. Long week.” The lie tasted bitter. How could she explain the whirlwind that had consumed her, the seismic shift in her world that had occurred in the dim, velvet confines of a stranger’s embrace? A stranger who was now anything but.
