The clink of ice against glass was a phantom echo in Liam’s ears, a constant reminder of the night that had irrevocably fractured his world. He sat across from Mark at their usual booth in The Daily Grind, the air thick with the scent of roasted coffee and the unspoken tension that had become Liam’s unwanted companion. Mark, oblivious, was mid-story, his voice a familiar rumble as he recounted some mundane triumph from his work. Liam nodded, forced a smile, his gaze flitting to the window, to the street, anywhere but directly into Mark’s guileless eyes.

Every casual question Mark posed felt like an interrogation. "You seem a bit quiet, man. Everything okay?" The concern in his friend's voice was a sharp jab, twisting the knife of guilt already lodged in Liam’s gut. He’d learned to deflect, to offer vague assurances, to paint himself as tired, stressed, anything but the truth: he was consumed by the memory of Maya.

Maya. Her name was a whispered prayer and a curse on his lips, a secret he guarded with a ferocity that surprised even himself. He saw her everywhere. A flash of auburn hair in a crowded street, the curve of a smile on a stranger’s face, the echo of laughter that was too light, too free. Each phantom sighting sent a jolt of panic through him, a cold dread that Mark might see her too, might connect the dots, might discover the unspeakable truth that lay between them.
