The air in Liam’s apartment felt thick, stagnant, as if every breath he took was a struggle against an invisible pressure. Sunlight, usually a welcome intrusion, now felt harsh, accusatory, slicing through the blinds and painting stark lines across the familiar landscape of his bedroom. It had been days since that night, days that had blurred into a single, agonizing ache. The phantom touch of Maya’s skin, the echo of her whispered words, the sheer, unadulterated fire that had consumed him – it all played on repeat behind his eyes, a relentless, beautiful torment.

He’d tried to outrun it, to bury it under the mundane rhythm of his days. Work had been a blur, conversations with friends felt distant, hollow. How could he pretend that the earth-shattering connection he’d forged, the raw, primal joy he’d experienced, hadn’t been with the one person on earth who was utterly, irrevocably off-limits?

He found himself walking, aimlessly at first, the city a muted backdrop to his internal turmoil. Each step was a desperate attempt to outpace the thoughts that clung to him like a second skin. He passed familiar cafes, bustling shops, the ordinary lives of strangers unfolding around him, a world that seemed to spin on, unburdened by the seismic shift that had occurred within him.
