The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to Karina like a shroud, a stark contrast to the damp, earthy aroma of Seattle she had grown to associate with a fragile kind of hope. Her mother was gone. The news had arrived like a phantom limb, a dull ache where a connection, however strained, had once existed. The second crash, a clumsy fender-bender that had left her with a broken collarbone and a wrecked car, had been the final straw. The driver, a young man whose eyes held the vacant stare of someone perpetually lost, had been apologetic, almost pathetic. But Karina saw beyond his flustered demeanor. She saw the familiar ghost of the bus, the hulking metal beast that had shattered her life. This time, she wouldn’t be a victim. This time, she would fight back.
