It wasn’t the impact itself that had truly shaken her; it was the sudden, suffocating wave of memory that had crashed over her in its wake. The screech of tires, the sickening crunch of metal, the screams – so many screams. She’d woken up in a different hospital then, the taste of blood in her mouth, the phantom sensation of being tossed about like a rag doll. Seattle, the city she’d intended to visit for a fleeting, cathartic escape, had become a cage, its relentless rain a constant reminder of the storm brewing within her.

Akabar’s visit had been a surprise, his usual vibrant energy a little muted, his smile a touch strained. He’d brought a bouquet of sunflowers, their cheerful faces a stark contrast to the pallor of his skin. He’d sat by her bedside, his hand, surprisingly cool, resting on hers.
