Chapter 17
Confrontation at Twilight Peak
Shadowclaw intercepts them as they emerge with the Jade Paw, leading to a dramatic confrontation on a high peak, bathed in the twilight he desires.
The air on Twilight Peak was thin and sharp, tasting of ancient stone and the coming night. Luna clutched the Jade Paw, its cool, smooth surface a comforting weight against her fur. Beside her, Rivergem’s breaths came in short puffs, her eyes wide as she scanned the darkening horizon. Elder Whisperwind’s gaze was fixed, his old bones still despite the biting wind. They had emerged from the hidden grotto, the Jewel of their ancestors finally in their possession, only to be met by a silence that felt heavier than any storm.

He was larger than Luna had imagined, his fur the color of a starless night, his eyes twin embers glowing with a malevolent light. He moved with a predatory grace, each step deliberate, each twitch of his tail a promise of danger.
"So," Shadowclaw's voice was a low rasp, like stones grinding together, "the little village cat has found her prize. How… predictable." He stepped fully into the fading light, and the air around him seemed to grow colder, the very shadows deepening at his command.
