Chapter 6
Lingering Shadows
Safely back in civilization, the group tries to resume normal life, but the woods' horrors haunt their dreams. A chilling sound, a fleeting shadow—subtle signs suggest their escape was not as complete as they believed. The ancient woods may have let them go, but not entirely.
The asphalt was a miracle. It was smooth, predictable, and blessedly free of the tangled roots that had tripped them, the deceptive moss that had slicked their boots, the unseen forces that had whispered their names in the rustling leaves. Liam’s tires hummed a steady rhythm against the road, a stark contrast to the frantic, thudding pulse that had become their constant companion for days. Beside him, Chloe stared out the window, her knuckles white where she gripped the dashboard, her gaze vacant, as if still trying to reconcile the orderly lines of passing fences with the chaotic embrace of the forest. Maya, in the back, had her eyes closed, her breathing shallow, a faint tremor running through her. Ben sat beside her, his sketchbook closed on his lap, his eyes darting nervously at every shadow that flickered across the car’s interior.
They had emerged from the woods not like conquerors, but like refugees. The clearing had been anticlimactic, a mundane patch of overgrown field that simply *wasn't* trees. No dramatic parting of the boughs, no celestial light. Just an abrupt end to the oppressive green. They’d stumbled out, blinking in the weak afternoon sun, their clothes torn, their faces streaked with dirt and exhaustion, their bodies aching with a weariness that went deeper than muscle fatigue. The silence of the open space had been deafening, a gaping void where the forest’s symphony of unseen threats had played.
Liam had found the road first, a faint, almost forgotten track swallowed by weeds. It had felt like a lifeline, a tangible promise of return. He’d driven them back to civilization, to the nearest town, a place of garish neon signs and the comforting smell of exhaust fumes. They’d spoken little on the drive. What was there to say? They had survived. They had escaped. The ‘thing’ was behind them. That was the narrative they clung to, the story they desperately needed to believe.
