Chapter 7
The Serpent's Coil
Lord Valerius makes his presence known, a shadow lurking in the court. Kael notices his calculating gaze on William, sensing the danger building beneath the surface.
The silk of the prince's tunic brushed against my cheek as I flattened myself against the tapestry. He’d led me through a maze of corridors, each turn a fresh wave of panic that I fought to suppress. My breath hitched, a silent gasp I prayed no one heard. He’d called me "boy," his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the stone floor, and then he'd spun a tale so quick, so seamless, I almost believed it myself. I was a stray, a frightened urchin, and he, the benevolent prince, had offered me a moment’s shelter before shooing me back into the night. A convenient lie, a shield against the glares of the guards, the sharp edges of their suspicion.
But the prince wasn’t just kind. He was… watchful. His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, had scanned my face, not with the usual disdain for my kind, but with a keen, almost unnerving curiosity. He saw the fear, yes, but he also saw something else, something I desperately tried to conceal. He saw the thief, the one who’d been caught with his hand in the gilded purse of a nobleman, the one who’d nearly tripped over the velvet hem of a duchess’s gown in his haste to disappear. He saw enough to know I was prey, but not enough to know *why* I was so desperate to flee.
Now, tucked away in a shadowed alcove, I watched him across the grand hall. The air thrummed with the forced gaiety of a royal reception, a cacophony of laughter, music, and clinking goblets. I could feel the vibrations through the soles of my worn boots, a constant reminder of the world I navigated by feel and sight, not sound. My world. And in that world, silence was a weapon, but also a vulnerability. A secret that could be twisted, used against me.
